How to Send Money

Credit/debit card payments are now processed via digital payment options available. These Transfer tools are free to use, but some charge fees, and some solutions take longer to process transfers than others. Here are ways you can send money safely.

Send Money Safely

1. Zelle

Fees: None

Transaction limits: $500 weekly, subject to bank limits

Transfer time: Within minutes

Zelle is a popular peer-to-peer payment tool for sending and receiving money via bank transfers. The company managed roughly $519 million worth of transactions during the first half of 2020 alone. Individuals can enroll to use Zelle through their bank‘s mobile app or by downloading the Zelle app. Either the sender or the person receiving money must have access to Zelle through their bank or credit union.

Zelle payments are processed quickly, with the money accessible within minutes in most cases. If you’re looking to get money to loved ones fast, it doesn’t get much faster than Zelle. Zelle makes the process simple for the receiver, too, sending them a notification that explains what they need to do to receive their payment.

5. Google Pay

Fees: None

Transaction limits: $10,000 per single transaction, $10,000 every seven days, $3,000 every 24 hours for Florida residents

Transfer time: Instant from Google Pay balance or debit card, five to 10 days from a bank account

Google is everywhere, it seems, so it makes sense that it would offer a way for individuals to send money quickly. Android Pay and Google Wallet now make up what is known as Google Pay. Google accounts are free to set up and are accessible through online access and its mobile app. You can use an existing Google account to set up Google Pay.

Google Pay uses a linked debit card or bank account for sending money. Sending money through Google Pay is only available in the U.S. and India currently.

6. Apple Pay

Fees: None

Transaction limits: $10,000 maximum over seven-day period, subject to bank limits

Transfer time: Instant for Apple Pay users

Apple Pay allows you to send money to family and friends inside Messages or using Siri on your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. There is no extra app to download to access this service. Payments are instant. Unfortunately, Android users are out of luck, as are those with some older Apple devices.

You’ll need to link a debit card to Apple Pay to use the service. Users must be 18 years or older and U.S. citizens to send or receive money through Apple Pay. Green Dot Bank provides the services.

Money sent to other people goes to their Apple Cash account, where they can use it directly or transfer to a bank account or Visa debit card.

4. Cash App

Fees: 3% when sent from a credit card, 1% or 1.5% for instant deposits

Transaction limits: $7,500 total in any seven-day period

Transfer time: Instant for Cash App to Cash App payments

Another simple way to send money to loved ones is through the Cash App. Created by Square, the Cash App allows users to create free accounts and quickly send money to other people.

Sending a payment through the Cash App is straightforward. Open up the app, enter the transfer amount and the receiver’s email address or phone number, add a reason for the payment and tap “Pay.” Sending funds requires a linked bank account or credit card. There are no fees for using its peer-to-peer service.

The Cash App limits how much money you can send to people. Senders are limited to $7,500 in total in any seven-day period. The app may require additional identification if you send more than $250, either in one transaction or multiple transactions, over a seven-day period.

2. Venmo

Fees: 3% fee when using a credit card; other payment methods are free

Transaction limits: $4,999.99 weekly for person-to-person transactions after identity confirmation

Transfer time: As soon as instantly

Digital wallets are becoming more common, and Venmo is one of the most recognized wallet apps. Available on iOS and Android, Venmo is able to make quick payments to family and friends a breeze. Unlike Zelle, Venmo isn’t tied to specific banks. Both parties need a Venmo account, which is easily set up using a mobile phone number or email address.

Users can either add funds to their Venmo account or link an external payment method like a bank account or credit card. Venmo also allows users to sync their phone and Facebook contacts.

Once set up, users pay by inputting the contact name, including a reason for the payment and setting the transfer amount. The money shows up in the recipient’s Venmo account almost instantly. Users also can request money from other individuals.
