BLT Cream (Benzocaine, Lidocaine, Tetracaine)

Benzocaine, Lidocaine, Tetracaine (BLT) is a combination of topical anesthetics used for topical anesthesia and mild pain control, including use during procedures such as endoscopy, surgery, and dental procedures. It can be used for gag reflex suppression as well. The onset of anesthesia is typically less than 1 minute, and the effects last 30 to 60 minutes. Benzocaine, Lidocaine and Tetracaine are more likely than other local anesthetics to cause contact sensitization. The potential for sensitization increases with the duration of contact. These products are not intended for prolonged application time or use.

Pre-procedure topical anesthetics like BLT cream are effective in the numbing of the epidermis prior to laser, cosmetic, and dermatological procedures. Some procedures that these anesthetics are used for include laser hair removal, dermal filler and Botox injections, and laser tattoo removal.

Benzocaine – One of the most commonly-used anesthetics used in medicine today. Benzocaine works by inhibiting voltage-dependent sodium channels on neuron membranes. It has a very fast onset and is generally well-tolerated, making it popular for a variety of applications. Lidocaine – A commonly-used topical anesthetic that was discovered in the 1940’s. Lidocaine works by blocking sodium channels which, when used topically, prohibits local neurons from signaling the brain. When applied directly to the skin, lidocaine has an onset of approximately 4 minutes. Tetracaine – A longer acting anesthetic which works by changing the function of ryanodine receptors that control the release of intracellular calcium.
